YMCA International Fencing Cup 2010

The YMCA international Fencing Cup 2010 presented by Standard Chartered Bank was held on the 11 and 12 of December 2010 at the Raffles Institution Indoor Sports Hall. Featuring 140 fencers from seven countries, the event was organised by YMCA of Singapore and the Y*Sparks Fencing Interest Group.
The event was well received, with both local and international participants. Local clubs included our very own YMCA Fencing Club, Blade Club Fencing, Fencing Masters and Z Fencing. Overseas clubs included Excalibur Australia, Hong Kong Fencing School, Life-wide Fencing Studio (Hong Kong), Swashbucklers Fencing Club (Malaysia), Touche Fencing Club (Malaysia), HIS Club Jakarta, 5 Junior School Club (Indonesia) and IBSH Hsinchu (Taiwan).

We were honoured to have Mr. Seah Kian Peng, MP Marine Parade GRC to grace our event as our Guest of Honour. Mr. Seah gave an encouraging speech, saying that “while fencing has been featured in the modern Olympic games since the late 1800s, fencing in Singapore had only started picking up over the last two or three decades. Despite being a relatively young fencing nation, fencing has been identified by the Singapore Sports Council as a sport that Singaporeans can excel in internationally”.

VIPs representing our various sponsors and supporting organisations include Mr. Sean Wallace (Group Head, Origination and Client Coverage, Wholesale Banking, Standard Chartered Bank), Mr. Jay House (Head of WB Corporate Affairs, Standard Chartered Bank), Ms. Maria Segergren (Regional Marketing Head, Southern Asia, Standard Chartered Bank), Mr. Chua Puay Hian (Director, Business Development, Singapore Health Services), Mrs. Peggy Kwong (LiveWell), Mr. Bob Gambardella (Chief, Singapore Sports Institute & Sports Development Group, Singapore Sports Council), Mr. Nicholas Fang (President, Fencing Singapore) and Mr. Adrian Cordeiro (Ex-Principal, Teck Whye Secondary School).

Mr. Leslie Wong (Board of Directors, YMCA) also graced the 2nd day of the competition to give out prizes to the event winners of the day.

Standard Chartered Bank was our Presenting Sponsor, with Venue Sponsor Raffles Institution and Main Sponsors Hyflux, LiveWell, SingHealth and StikFas. Our Supporters include Fencing Singapore and Singapore Sports Council. We are thankful for their kind and generous support towards this event.

About Fencing

Fencing is one of the four sports which have been featured at every one of the modern Olympic Games. Currently, three types of weapon are used in Olympic fencing:

  • Foil — a light thrusting weapon with a valid target area that is restricted to the torso, including the back, but not the arms. Hits are scored only with the tip; hits with the side of the blade of the weapon are disregarded. Only a single hit can be scored by either fencer at one time. If both fencers hit at the same time, the referee must use the rules of "right of way" to determine which fencer gets the touch.
  • Sabre — a light cutting and thrusting weapon that uses a valid target area of everything above the waist, except for the hands. The sabre is primarily used to slash, so hits with the side of the blade as well as the tip are scored as valid. Like the foil, this weapon follows the rules of "right of way", and only one fencer can score a hit at a time.
  • Épée — a heavy thrusting weapon, with a valid target area of the entire body, head to toe. Like the foil, all hits must be scored with the tip, and not the sides of the blade. Unlike either sabre or foil, epee allows simultaneous hits to be scored by both fencers at the same time. There is no "right of way" in épée.
